Prof. Wang was born in Nanjing, China. After graduation from Nanjing Foreign Language School, he went to Nanjing University for college education majoring in chemistry and conducted his undergraduate research with Prof. Jun-Jie Zhu. He received his B.S. degree with honors in 2001 before coming to the United States. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry from Rice University in 2007 based upon his graduate work on nanoplasmonics conducted under the supervision by Prof. Naomi J. Halas. As a postdoctoral research fellow, he worked on single-molecule spectroscopy and biophysics under the tutelage of Prof. Paul F. Barbara at the University of Texas at Austin. In August 2010, he joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina as a tenure-track Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in August 2016 and to Full Professor in January 2024. His current research focuses on the optical, catalytic, and photocatalytic properties of complex nanostructures and the mechanisms of interfacial molecular transformations on nanostructured surfaces. He is the recipient of South Carolina Governor’s Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research, University of South Carolina Breakthrough Star Award, National Science Foundation CAREER award, IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists (Honorable Mention), Dissertation Award for Outstanding Research in Physical Sciences (Sigma-Xi Society Rice-Texas Medical Center Chapter), Materials Research Society Graduate Student Award (Silver Medal), and China Government Award for Outstanding Student Abroad.
